Planning a Cozy Window Seat with Storage and a View

A window seat turns an unused corner into the best spot in the house. Here is how to plan one that is comfortable and useful.

Almost every home has a window that is just there: a bay you walk past, a quiet landing or a bedroom corner that never quite gets used. Add a window seat and that spot becomes the place everyone wants to sit, with soft light, a view and handy storage tucked underneath.

Pick the right window

The best window seats sit where you would naturally want to pause. Bay windows are the classic choice, but a deep wall, an alcove beside a chimney or the end of a hallway can work just as well. Think about the view, the light at different times of day and whether the spot is cozy or a little drafty.

Get the comfort right

  • Seat height: aim for a height similar to a dining chair so it is easy to sit down and get up.
  • Seat depth: deep enough to tuck your legs up, but not so deep that you cannot lean back against the wall.
  • Cushions: choose firm foam with a soft wrap and a removable, washable cover.
  • Back support: pile on cushions or add a padded panel to the wall.

Build in clever storage

A window seat is a perfect place to hide clutter. Choose lift-up lids for blankets and seasonal items, or drawers for things you reach for every day, such as toys, books and board games. Open cubbies at the sides look neat and keep favourite reads close by.

Fresh tip: check where your radiators, vents and outlets are before you design. A seat can often be built around them with a vented front panel, so you keep the warmth and lose none of the comfort.

Think about the window itself

A window seat puts you right next to the glass, so a drafty or single-glazed window will feel cold. Upgrading to efficient glazing keeps the seat comfortable in winter and cooler in summer. Add a blind or light curtain that you can pull without leaning over the cushions.

Finish with light and texture

A small wall light or reading lamp makes the seat useful after dark. Layer a throw, a couple of patterned cushions and a plant on the sill, and you have a corner that feels calm and inviting all year. Our interior team would be happy to design and build one for your home.
